Boy Vanished From a Cruise Ship at Seven, Then Someone Rang the Doorbell

Oscar was seven years old when he disappeared from a cruise ship in the middle of an ordinary family holiday, and the search that followed turned up nothing at all. Years later, long after the police had told his parents to stop hoping, the bell rang at their front door one evening after dinner. What Margot and Evan found on the porch answered one question and opened a hundred more.

Dinner was finished and the plates were stacked beside the sink when the bell went. Margot looked at the clock on the wall, then at her husband, and asked whether they had forgotten somebody on the calendar. Evan shook his head and kept drying the pan in his hands, just as puzzled as she was.

It was the wrong hour for company. The street outside had already gone quiet, porch lights switched off, cars parked for the night. People in their part of town did not turn up unannounced after dark, and the last delivery van had rattled past hours earlier. Whoever stood out there had picked a strange moment to arrive, and something about that single ring made the whole kitchen feel unnaturally still.
